The holidays are coming, and so are the houseguests. Whether it's the in-laws for Thanksgiving, college kids home for winter break or friends crashing after a New Year's party, someone is about to need a bed. A guest room that looks welcoming doesn't take a weekend of work. With a simple plan, you can get it ready in about 30 minutes.
Here's our step-by-step holiday guest room checklist, plus a few tricks to make next time even faster.
Before You Start: Do a 2-Minute Walk-Through
Most guest rooms do double duty as an office, a gift-wrapping station or a storage spot for "I'll deal with it later" boxes. Before you clean anything, stand in the doorway and ask yourself three questions:
- Where will my guest put their suitcase?
- Where will they hang or store their clothes?
- Can they reach the bed, the outlet and the light switch without tripping over anything?
Whatever is in the way of those three things gets moved first.
The 30-Minute Guest Room Checklist
Minutes 0–10: Clear and Reset
- Move stray boxes, laundry baskets and hobby supplies to another room or into a closet.
- Clear the top of the nightstand and dresser.
- Empty a drawer or two and free up a few hangers in the closet.
- Take out the trash and put in a fresh bag.
Minutes 10–20: Make the Bed (the Right Way, on the First Try)
This is the step that usually takes the longest, and not because making a bed is hard. It's because guest room sheets live in the back of the linen closet, they only come out a few times a year and nobody remembers which set fits which bed.
Sound familiar? You pull out a set, get halfway through putting on the fitted sheet and realize it's a full, not a queen. Back to the closet you go.
- Grab a clean sheet set in the right size for the guest bed (or the pull-out, air mattress or daybed).
- Put on a mattress protector if you have one.
- Make the bed with the fitted sheet, flat sheet, pillowcases and a blanket or comforter.
- Leave an extra blanket folded at the foot of the bed. Guests are often too polite to ask for one.
Tip: If the sheets have been sitting in the closet since last year, give them a quick wash or tumble them in the dryer for 10 minutes to freshen them up.
Minutes 20–25: Quick Clean
- Dust the nightstand, dresser and windowsill.
- Vacuum, paying extra attention to under the bed.
- Check the bedside lamp bulb and make sure there's an outlet your guest can reach for their phone charger.
- Open the window for a few minutes to air out the room if the weather allows.
Minutes 25–30: Add the Welcoming Touches
- A stack of clean towels (bath towel, hand towel and washcloth) on the bed or dresser.
- A phone charger or multi-port charging cable.
- The Wi-Fi network name and password written on a small card.
- A glass or water bottle on the nightstand.
- A few travel-size toiletries in a basket (toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, lotion) for anyone who forgot theirs.
- A small seasonal touch: a candle, a plant or a few holiday decorations.
That's it. Your guest room is ready.

Make Next Time Even Faster: Label Your Guest Sheets
The biggest time-waster in guest room prep is digging for the right sheets. The fix takes a few minutes, once.
SnapEaze labels snap onto the corner of each sheet and show the size at a glance. On fitted sheets, they also show which way the sheet goes on the bed, so there's no more turning it around halfway through. They're small, discreet once the bed is made, and machine washable and dryer safe, so you snap them on once and leave them.
- Pick a color just for the guest room. Give the guest bed its own color so those sheets never get mixed in with everyday bedding.
- Label the extra beds, too. Pull-outs, daybeds and the kids' twin beds that guests borrow over the holidays are the easiest ones to mix up. You can buy labels individually, in any quantity and color: Twin, Full, Queen, King and Cal-King.
- Keep each set together. BeeBands wrap around a folded sheet set (fitted, flat and pillowcases), so the whole set comes off the shelf in one grab.
Next time someone calls to say they're coming for the weekend, you'll walk to the closet, grab the guest set and be done.
